I've never "blogged" before, so I hope I am doing this correctly! My name is Lauren Hopkins, and I am a teacher at Coventry High School. This will be my eighth year teaching both English and Literacy at the high school. My most memorable unit this year was with my ninth grade class as we examined teenage dating violence in both fiction and non-fiction. My students loved the readings that we did together, but they still struggle with choosing independent reading books that they enjoy. I look forward to meeting everyone on the 14th!

Lauren--

You did fine!

Your lesson on teeange dating sounds very interesting. What books did you use in your unit? Do you enjoy Coventry High School? Is Pam Blanco still a teacher there?

Thanks! We worked primarily with the novel Breathing Underwater. The kids absolutely loved it, and I had some great supplemental materials from the RI Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Both the kids and I were stunned by the statistics, and it made for excellent discussion. I work with some awesome educators at CHS, and Pam is one of them. I actually took the Lit Institute with her four years ago--she is phenomenal!

My name is Alicia McCormick and I teach at Johnston High School. The problem that I had with both books ties in to Laurens comment on chosing her own material. We have departmental exams that test content PLUS all the high stakes tests that are trying to measure process and gse's. Where does anyone have time to add creative selections. I need to focus on creative delivery!

Greetings! My name is Jennifer Black, and I teach 6th grade (all subject areas) at a small public elementary school in western Mass. Why am I taking a summer course at RIC?? Well, I am a native of RI and my mom is a RIC alumnus (education, of course!). I thought it would be fun to base at my mom's house and take a course through a different branch of the NWP. Anyway, my favorite unit this past year was "Immigration". We read the book "Maggie's Door", by Patricia Reilly Giff, and explored both the history of immigration in the U.S. and the current state of affairs. We concluded the unit with a trip to Ellis Island in NYC!! I'm looking forward to getting my hands on the book (I just signed up for this course last week!) and getting started!
